Sydney Jacobs had what most would consider to be an ordinary childhood. She had parents that loved her - two of them who were and are still together. An only child, she was spoiled rotten, given anything that she wanted. However, just like any other child, she went through a phase during which she did all she could to rebel against her parents. When she was eleven, she decided that she hated living like she was - under their thumbs like some prized possession.
Sydney was a smart child. So, for her, it was a rebellion to spend time with people who, well, maybe weren't as smart as she was. At 11, she started spending time with some older kids - they were 14. They let her hang around, because well, she was the one that bought everything and she never really cared about what they were doing. However, even at 11, she knew that her world was changing forever when she saw him. James Rider was 17 and he was hanging around with those kids too. Strangely, he seemed to think she was pretty, wanted her. At 11, she didn't think anything of it, other than that she knew that she wanted to kiss him.
It wasn't until after her twelfth birthday that she decided that maybe he was really serious, that he really wanted her. It had always made her smile when he wanted to spend time with her, when he'd ask her out. At first, she'd thought he was joking. However, one day, she said yes. And well, as far as she's concerned, that's the best decision that she ever made. From that moment, Sydney knew that there wouldn't be anyone else for her. It took a lot of work to convince her parents to let her go out with him. After all, he was six years older than her - he was already eighteen at the time! However, with a few typical teenage girl threats - not eating, never talking to them again, things like that - they agreed. Of course, there were stipulations. But, nothing that she couldn't live with.
From then on, he was all that mattered to her. It wasn't easy. Who could understand a girl in middle school who was in love - really, truly in love? But that was the thing, she never asked people to understand. She was happy and that was all that mattered. Of course, their lives weren't happy. She was only twelve when they got together - no matter how mature she was, she had a lot of growing up to do. They got into fights and even broke up a few times.
The worst of it was shortly after they started dating. They were apart for two weeks - and she was miserable the whole time. They got back together and she wasn't sure that anything could ruin that for her. However, about a month after they got back together, James told her about the girl that he'd been with while they'd been apart. She was devastated - even more so when he told her that the girl was pregnant. Knowing that she had to be strong, this was the man that she wanted to be with. The summer before her ninth grade year, James welcomed his son into the world. She was there with him, holding his hand. The little boy was beautiful and no matter that Sydney was heartbroken, she loved him almost as much as she loved his father.
That was the worst part of her life. High school went by rather fast for her. During her senior year, James proposed to her - of course she accepted. Who else would she want to be with? She knew that her life would be different with him. At that point, she was spoiled. She had everything she ever wanted. It wouldn't be like that with him. But, she'd have him.
So, on her eighteenth birthday, they told her parents that they were getting married. A few days later, they drove to Las Vegas and got married in one of those cute little chapels. When they got back home, her parents were upset. They'd wanted to give them a big wedding. However, Sydney was happy. She was Sydney Rider now. What else could there be for her?
They lived in the guest house of her parents house for a while. She got a job, secretary for a law firm and she was going to night school. He was working at a restaurant. He had a hard time keeping a job. However, no matter how upset she got, she couldn't be mad at him. She loved him. Like any married couple, they fought. But she happiest when she was with him. And well, what else mattered?
